Congratulations to all the 4th and 5th graders who participated in Global Reading Challenge this year. Teams competed in our in-school challenge during the month of February and answered an impressive 24 questions related to the five books they read. In 2008, youth and self-advocates from across Washington State collaborated with Senator Rosemary McAuliffe (D-1st District) to draft legislation to include disability history and the disability civil rights movement in K-12 public school and higher education curriculum. This group of young advocates successfully lobbied the legislature, with overwhelming support from both the House and Senate. Summer Reading Postcards, which are available on the Horace Mann website and in the Mann library, are due by this Friday, September 21. Postcards will be on display during the month of September and students who participate will be recognized with a certificate and celebrate with a special party, complete with a prize drawing, popcorn, and a free book for all participants.
