Welcome to the PTSA Art Docent Program at Horace Mann!

Horace Mann PTSA is proud to sponsor art education for all students with a robust art docent program that builds the foundation for success in the visual arts. PTSA funds the purchase of art supplies, training materials, and lessons, as well as many special art programs such as Reflections and the Northwest Art Project.  

Our Art Docents bring art instruction to the classroom with volunteer led lessons in the visual arts. Students are exposed to techniques, mediums, and famous works of art and artists, while developing observational skills, fine-motor skills, and awareness of cultures and the environment. 

Horace Mann also includes kiln projects in our art program. By fifth grade, students will have experience in the three major clay hand-building techniques – slab, pinching, and coiling. Kiln coordinators work as a team to make sure each student’s clay piece goes through the forming, firing, and glazing processes successfully. Fourth and fifth grade students will also have the opportunity to experiment with glass fusing.  

Enhancing the PTSA Art Program are special art experiences held throughout the school year. Reflections is an annual national cultural arts competition that challenges students to create art inspired by a specific theme. The Northwest Art Project is presented by the Junior League of Seattle to exhibit themed collections of Northwest art at the school. Finally, fifth grade students work directly with a local artist during the Artist in Residence workshop. 

Each Spring, Horace Mann PTSA puts on Art Night - a celebration of all things art related! This is chance for parents, students, and the community to see student art projects from the whole year.
