Getting Started as an Art Docent

Thank you for your interest in becoming an Art Docent at Horace Mann! Our art program would not be possible without the dedication of volunteers like you. If needed, please apply or update your LWSD Volunteer Application (expires after 2 years).

What is an Art Docent?

Art Docents act as art instructors, leading classrooms in hands-on lessons in the visual arts, usually once a month. Lessons can be based on a well-known work of art, in the style of a famous artist, teach a specific technique, reflect the current season, inspired by a favorite children’s book – just about anything! Our Docents are parent and grandparent volunteers who have a passion for encouraging creativity in the visual arts. No artistic skill is required.

Art Docent Training

In the fall, there will be an evening training session that gives you everything you need to know to lead your first art lesson. You’ll meet the PTSA Co-VPs of Art and other docents, where an overview of the Art Docent program, as well as learn about other volunteer opportunities such as NW Art Project and Art Night. We will cover ideas for lessons plans, showing how you can incorporate the Elements of Art and Principles of Design in your projects, and see what types of materials are available in the Art and Science Room.
